We've inching toward the halfway mark here in December, and somehow nearing the end of 2023. Time for a quick update on what we're watching for the next days and final weeks of the year. The big weather story this week will be plentiful wet weather across the Southern Plains for the latter half of the week into next weekend. This will be a widespread precipitation event for Texas, with some of that anomalous moisture expected to push into southeast Colorado, and portions of New Mexico, Oklahom
Weekend OutlookBy Brendan HebertonFri, Mar 10, 2023
Another rather remarkable weekend of weather is on tap for the Western United States as another Atmospheric River event gets cranking across California, and high elevation snow across the west continues to pile up. Here's a look at all the wet weather moving inland over the coming days, the animation valid from this morning through Sunday night: And the expected precipitation accumulation for the same period: For California that will equate to more than 5" of precipitation in the coming days

Considering the recent flow of moisture toward the western U.S. from the Pacific (atmospheric river events), let's check in on how the water situation looks presently, particularly the Colorado River system. Just after Christmas, a series of atmospheric rivers brought dangerous amounts of rain and snow to California during a 3-week period. So

One storm is not a drought buster, however, the current extended pattern in place over California could make a significant dent in the ongoing drought there – but at a cost. Precipitation totals along coastal California (northern California in particular) have been significant over the last 14 days, with heavy snow inundating the Sierra Nevada mountains – delivering feet upon feet of snow, and precipitation totals in excess of 10" over the two week period. Snowfall over the last seven days:

We hope everyone had a very merry holiday weekend, and are enjoying the thaw after last week's deep freeze – assuming you were lucky enough to avoid the thawing of frozen pipes! Temperatures today will be near 50°F across the greater Denver metro area, with highs near 60°F on Tuesday. We should manage one more mostly mild day Wednesday before our our next weather system arrives Wednesday evening. State of the AtmosphereBy Brendan HebertonSun, Jan 24, 2021
Well, we are quickly approaching the end of the first month of 2021, and if you were hoping the year would turn things around in the snow department, you can probably pile this on to the list of disappointments to start the year! I say probably, as we do still have a chance for some snow this week, but odds of anything significant across Northeast Colorado look low. Officially Denver has recorded just 1.9" of snow so far this month, well below the longterm average of 6.5" for January. It's pos
